High Desk And Chair As A Factor Of Myopia In Adolescents

- Jun 13, 2019-

According to the information center of the second session of the 13th National People's Congress, Chen Aizhu, deputy of the National People's Congress and director of Liannan Village Committee of Aojiang Town, Pingyang County, Zhejiang Province, submitted to the General Assembly "Suggestions on the Adjustment and Management of the Height of Desks and Chairs for Primary and Secondary School Students" (hereinafter referred to as "Recommendations").

"Suggestion" points out that the phenomenon of "tall sitting at a low table" and "short sitting at a high table" is prevalent in primary and secondary schools. Children sit at least eight hours a day at school as we do at work. If the table and chair height is not appropriate, it will inevitably affect the healthy growth of children. Professor of Peking University Medical Department has done a research, 70% to 80% of children in China because of incorrect sitting posture, affecting growth and development. Because the height of desks and chairs does not match the height of students, it is likely that some students in the development stage will have excessive vertebral curvature and straightening or hunchback phenomenon, which will also lead to myopia, decreased immunity, impaired cardiopulmonary function and so on.

The Suggestion points out that there are two main problems in the desks and chairs used by primary and secondary school students: first, compared with the previous, the average height of children has increased, but the desks and chairs they use have not been improved accordingly; second, children of different heights, or even very different heights, use the same height. Degree, size desks and chairs. According to the sample survey in elementary school, the height difference of students in the same grade is 35 centimeters. For example, in a school, the average height difference between the first and sixth grades is 27.8 centimeters, but they use desks and chairs of the same height. As a result, the first grade is too short to reach the table, and the senior grade children even have difficulty putting their legs under the table. The existence of these two problems is the main reason for their negative impact on their normal learning and physical development. Small as it is, it can affect the healthy growth of children and the future of the country. It is urgent to pay attention to these problems and take measures to solve them.
